Background of the Study
Inter-ethnic marriages have long been recognized as a means of fostering social integration, reducing ethnic divisions, and promoting peaceful coexistence in multi-ethnic societies. Wamba Local Government Area in Nasarawa State, home to diverse ethnic groups, has experienced periods of inter-ethnic tensions that have led to communal conflicts, often fueled by political, economic, and social disparities (Yakubu & Eze, 2023). While various conflict resolution strategies have been employed, inter-ethnic marriages remain an understudied yet potentially effective tool for long-term peacebuilding (Aliyu & Musa, 2024).
Inter-ethnic unions promote cultural understanding, create familial bonds between different ethnic communities, and reduce stereotypes that often lead to conflict. They also contribute to social cohesion by encouraging cooperation and mutual respect among diverse groups (Okoh, 2025). However, in some cases, such marriages face opposition from traditional and religious institutions, limiting their potential as a peacebuilding strategy.
This study seeks to examine the role of inter-ethnic marriages in fostering peace in Wamba LGA, assessing their contributions to social harmony and the challenges they face in being fully accepted as a conflict resolution strategy.
Statement of the Problem
Despite various peacebuilding efforts, inter-ethnic tensions in Wamba LGA continue to pose challenges to social cohesion and community development. While inter-ethnic marriages have been observed as a factor in reducing hostilities, their impact has not been fully explored. Societal prejudices, religious constraints, and economic disparities often hinder the widespread acceptance of inter-ethnic unions, limiting their role in peacebuilding (Adamu, 2024).
Furthermore, while some inter-ethnic couples successfully bridge ethnic divisions, others experience rejection from their families and communities, leading to isolation rather than integration. This study will examine the extent to which inter-ethnic marriages contribute to peacebuilding in Wamba and explore the socio-cultural barriers affecting their effectiveness.
